A hole repair quote should say what it covers: cutting the damaged board back to a clean edge, backing for a larger hole, the patch itself, tape, the coats of compound, sanding and primer. Ask whether the price leaves the wall ready for paint or painted, because paint is not always included.
Health Canada says asbestos was used in some building materials before 1990, including drywall and spackling, and advises a professional test before renovating or remodelling. In a house built before 1990, test before anyone cuts or sands; a positive result is abatement work (ottawaabatement.com).
A hole in the wall or ceiling between an attached garage and the house is a hole in a barrier the Building Code requires: an air barrier between a garage and the rest of the house that stops gas and exhaust fumes (O. Reg. 163/24, 9.10.9.18.(4)). Patch it and seal it.
Patching is not named on either of the City's permit lists. If the patch is part of bigger work, such as moving a wall, ask the City before it starts.
Published Toronto and Ontario price pages put a small patch at about $150 to $600 per patch, read October 1, 2026. These are not Ottawa prices, and larger holes cost more.
