About Ottawa Drywallers
A hole, a crack, a stained ceiling or a room to board raises practical questions. Ontario's Building Code sets fastener spacing for drywall, a minimum thickness for board that holds up insulation, and a temperature rule for taping in cold weather. It treats the wall between an attached garage and the house as a gas barrier, and it names 5/8-inch (15.9 mm) Type X drywall for one way of separating a secondary suite. These are the questions this site answers, with each rule taken from the Code, the City, Health Canada or the law itself.
Some of the answers surprise people. The City's 2026 flood-repair FAQ says taking drywall off to let insulation dry needs no permit, while moving a wall is permit work. A single home's attached garage needs a sealed gas barrier and a self-closing door, not a fire-rated wall. Both drywall trades are voluntary in Ontario, so no licence is required, but fire separations and permit work are still inspected. In a house built before 1990, Health Canada advises a professional asbestos test before renovating.
Ottawa Drywallers is a matching service, not a drywall company. We do not patch, hang, tape or test anything and we do not employ contractors. You tell us what needs fixing or boarding, and we send your request to local drywall contractors listed in the Ottawa Construction Network directory. They reply to you by email. We do not screen or verify them, and we say so, which is why every page tells you what to check yourself.
