Can a taper finish drywall someone else hung in a Kanata condo?
A taper can finish board someone else hung: we found no Ontario rule that requires the person who hangs drywall and the person who tapes and finishes it to be the same person or company.
Ontario has two drywall trades under O. Reg. 876/21, the province's prescribed trades regulation: "Drywall, acoustic and lathing applicator" and "Drywall finisher and plasterer". Neither is compulsory, so a certificate is not required to do either job, and Skilled Trades Ontario says holders of these certificates will not appear on its public register. The finisher and plasterer scope includes surfacing, taping and finishing wallboard.
The practical questions are about the work, not who did which half:
- What finish level is wanted? The Gypsum Association's GA-214 guide describes levels 0 to 5 as an industry recommendation, not a Building Code rule; it lists Level 4 for flat paint and Level 5, a skim coat over the whole surface, for gloss or dark paint. Name the level in the quote.
- Is the hung board ready to tape? Ask the taper to look at it before quoting.
- What does the quote cover: coats of compound, sanding, primer, and texture matching where new work meets old?
Before the taper starts, ask them to name the finish level and say in writing what happens if the board they inherit needs fixing first.
